KWFM Trivia

  • ZZ Top's song "PARTY ON THE PATIO" was about KWFM —— Lee Dombrowski
  • At some point there was only one cart machine, which frequently broke down. Jim Brady was often called upon to work his magic on it. He developed a reputation as the "Miracle Man" who could rebuild the cart machines. [A cart machine is similar to an 8-Track player — even uses the same format tape cartridges — but they stop at the end of their program, cued up ready for the next play. They were very common at radio stations for jingles, commercials, PSAs, and such.]
  • Generally speaking, when the console (the mixing board that the turntables, microphone, cart machines, etc. go through) or any other equipment needed maintenance, it was time to call the "Jim Brady School of Electronics". He reputely would do maintenance on the board during long songs.
  • Allegedly, Dave Gordon once accidentally locked himself out of the building when he went down to meet a girl, perhaps a K-dub fan. No cell phones, no electronic door codes. Even a long track like "Refried Boogie" wouldn't save you from that!
  • So you're on the air at KWFM and you want to know what the program sounds like? A car stereo was rigged to be the monitor, its 12 volts powered off the console.
  • …these were just a few of the stories I heard during a "reunion" meeting back in 2004 or 2005 with Janie Snyder, Jim Brady & David LaRussa.
