DAVID La RUSSA

A RADIOGRAPHY

The call of radio was too strong though and within a year I was back on the air as a weekend host on WCMF, Rochester’s progressive FM radio station. Suzanne King, 1976

It was there that I met (among other great DJ’s) Suzanne King, who in 1977 began a weekly half-hour show called “Surf’s Up” which featured the new punk, new wave & power-pop records. Suzanne left the station not too long after that, eventually going on to fight the good fight (and still is) at the Environmental Protection Agency.

In early 1978 I took a job with WBUF in Buffalo. That station had been a real favorite of mine while living there and I really thought I’d scored a great job. Unfortunately, Anything That's Rock 'N Rollwithout my knowledge, the station had been sold to a Detroit company which was in the midst of destroying everything the station stood for. But it was too late to turn back. After much struggle, in January 1979 I was granted a weekly radio show called “Anything That’s Rock ‘n’ Roll” which was very much modeled after the much missed “Surf’s Up” program. Things at the station however were not good.

One of the few shining lights was being able to work with the very talented Paul Palo, a holdover I remembered hearing on the old WBUF and WphD.Paul Palo, 1978

Paul & I worked well together and we began the process of syndicating the show... but it never happened.
