DAVID La RUSSA

A RADIOGRAPHY

My career in broadcasting no doubt began on Christmas morning 1962, at the age of ten with a gift from my parents. A very space age looking unit called the “Caravelle” home broadcasting station. I promptly set it up in my bedroom, and for a few weeks Christmas morning, 1962

thereafter (until the thing broke) you could hear me having a lot of fun playing 45’s and doing comedy sketches, weather forecasts and commercials, all for the amusement of the family who would listen in on their AM radio’s.

This gift was no doubt the result of my parents noticing my interest in music and radio. How could they not? Back in those days you would very often find me, transistor radio in hand and earphone in ear, combing the radio dial for hours on end Caravelle

searching through the swarm of night time signals. Stations not only from Buffalo (near my home town of Tonawanda) but from far-away places like Cleveland, Memphis, Toronto, Boston & New York City, just to name a few. For me turning on a radio and hearing the DJ’s doing their thing was pure magic.
