Independent commercial station broadcasting from 26 December, 1976.
In 1976, South Africa (in furtherance of its apartheid policies)
partitioned off a new political entity known as Transkei,
declaring it to be an independent state. It was not
internationally recognized as such -- nevertheless, Transkei's
theoretical independence allowed for a commercial
broadcaster to be set up that was outside of the repressive
censorship control of the South African government.
Though branded as Capital Radio 604, this station actually
broadcast at 603 AM, and was heard -- not always clearly
or consistently -- through most of SA. In addition to music
programming featuring many songs and performers 'banned'
by South African authorities, Capital news featured uncensored
