WGTO signed on from Haines City, Florida in 1955. The 10,000-watt daytime-only station aired a Top 40 music format. Owner KWK, Inc., sold the station to Hubbard Broadcasting in 1958. WGTO moved to Cypress Gardens and boosted its power to 50,000 watts. This signal could be heard throughout all of central Florida including Lakeland, Orlando, and Tampa. They were on the air until 1994.
WGTO operated at 540 kHz with a daytime power of 50,000 watts and a nighttime power of 1,000 watts from studios at Cypress Gardens, Florida, just south of Lakeland/Winter Haven. Their transmitters were located ten miles north of Cypress Gardens between Lakeland/Winter Haven and Haines City, Florida. ~Geno Rice 5/27/2026
